Yulia Putintseva and Julia Goerges meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis Birmingham Classic.

Yulia Putintseva is coming off a straight sets win over Naomi Osaka that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Putintseva won 56 percent of her first serve points and 69 percent of her second serve points. Putintseva won 60 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her 10 break points. Putintseva got 67 percent of her first serves in play and won 60 percent of her total return points. It was an overall solid performance from Putintseva, and she now has two wins this year over top-10 players. It was the first ever win for Putintseva over the No. 1 player in the world. Putintseva has a chance to win three matches for the second time in her last three tournaments. Putintseva has won four of her last six matches on grass court.

Julia Goerges is coming off a straight sets win over Evgeniya Rodina that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Goerges won 73 percent of her first serve points and 77 percent of her second serve points. Goerges won 75 percent of her total service points and converted on two of her four break points. Goerges got 60 percent of her first serves in play and saved her only break point. Goerges is getting cleaner with her serve and is coming off easily one of the best performances we’ve seen from her all year, which should do wonders for her moving forward. Goerges looks to win three straight matches for the first time since Auckland. Goerges has won seven of her last eight matches on grass court.

These two have played three times and Goerges has won all three matches in straight sets. The most recent meeting was in 2017 Moscow.

There’s usually a letdown for players like Putintseva when they’re coming off a big victory. Goerges is also somebody who is slowly getting better with each set, and she’s had no trouble with Putintseva through three previous matches.

This should be a routine match for Goerges, as she marches to the semifinals.

Pick:
Julia Goerges
