Zarina Diyas and Flavia Pennetta meet Monday in the first round of the 2015 Wimbledon.
Zarina Diyas could use a big win here after splitting her last eight matches. Diyas is coming off a straight set loss to Johanna Konta in Eastbourne, a match in which she didn’t look good at all. In fact, remove Diyas walkover victory over Victoria Azarenka in Birmingham, and she’s lost four of her last six matches. The good news for Diyas is that she’s a very solid player once she finds her form, as she’s busted onto the scene lately in majors and has a victory over a top-10 player this year in Andrea Petkovic. It’s just a question of which Diyas shows up this week. Diyas has been eliminated in the first round of a major just once in her career, which was last year’s French Open. Diyas made the fourth round of last years Wimbledon.
Flavia Pennetta also isn’t coming in this match with great form, as she’s lost five of her last eight matches, which includes a straight set loss to Svetlana Kuznetsova in Eastbourne. Pennetta simply is not hitting the winners she usually hits, and she’s making a ton of unforced errors. The frustration is clearly setting in, and you have to question if Pennetta is falling off the map at the age of 33 years old. However, all in all, Pennetta is still a dangerous opponent who does have six victories over top-10 players since 2014. Pennetta has been bounced in the first round of a major just once in her last seven majors, which took place in this years Australian Open. Pennetta has been eliminated in the first round of the Wimbledon three times in her career.
This will be the first time these two have faced one another.
This will be an interesting matchup, as Diyas has the ability to eventually be a big time player on the women’s side. However, Pennetta has far more experience and the greater ability to turn things around quickly. If forced to pick, I like Pennetta and the reasonable chalk.
