Daria Gavrilova will play Zhang Shuai in the quarterfinals of the 2018 WTA Hong Kong Open.
Zhang Shuai won her last match in three sets. In that win, Zhang performed extremely well as she broke her opponents serve on 6 occasions while only losing 2 service games in the entire match. All throughout the tournament, Zhang Shuai has received serve very well as she has averaged 6 breakpoints won per game. It has been a really good few months for Zhang Shuai as she performed well at the WTA Japan Open, WTA Wuhan Open, and WTA China Open. Zhang Shuai will be hard to beat considering how well she has been playing leading up to this match.
On the other side of the coin, Daria Gavrilova has struggled to make it past the second round in most of her recent tournaments. Since the start of the US Open. this is only the second time that Daria Gavrilova has made it past the second round. Daria Gavrilova’s biggest problem has been her serve. This was evident in her last match as Daria Gavrilova lost 9 service games. Considering how well Zhang Shuai has been receiving, Daria Gavrilova could have big problems if she doesn’t improve her serve. That being said, Daria Gavrilova has a very good record at this tournament as she made the final of the Hong Kong Open in 2017.
Daria Gavrilova and Zhang Shuai have played twice in the past with each playing winning on one occasion. The most recent match was in 2016 where Daria Gavrilova won. Zhang Shuai’s win over Daria Gavrilova came in 2010. Both of the prior matches between Zhang Shuai and Daria Gavrilova were played on clay.
As far as this match is concerned, I am picking Zhang Shuai to win. Zhang has been in very good form while Daria Gavrilova has not been at her best. With such a great contrast in form, I see Zhang Shuai making the semifinals of the Hong Kong Open.
