The WTA Japan Open is set to begin this weekend which will mark the return of tennis to the Asian scene following a month-long break. In this tournament, Zhang Shuai will be the number 1 seed and she will be playing Magdalena Fręch from Poland.

Magdalena Fręch enters this tournament is poor form as she was eliminated from the US Open in the opening round of qualifying. Fręch has had a tough 2018 as she has failed to get any decent results in tournaments. This will be the second year that Magdalena Fręch is playing at the WTA Japan Open although she failed to make it through qualifying on her last attempt which was 12 months ago.

Zhang Shuai, on the other hand, is returning to the tour swiftly after she was eliminated in the opening round of Wimbledon. This is tournament is a great chance for Zhang Shuai to win her third WTA event as she is the highest ranked player entering. Most players have not returned from the US Open so the competition will be weaker than usual for Zhang Shuai. Both of Zhang Shuai’s previous WTA tournaments wins have been on the hard court and in Asian so she will be very comfortable in the atmosphere present in this tournament. Considering the significant skill gap and atmosphere advantage, Zhang Shuai will be very hard to beat.

This will be the first time that Zhang Shuai and Magdalena Fręch will play each other in a WTA event.

Taking everything into consideration, I am going to predict Zhang Shuai to win this match. Zhang Shuai has been very successful in Asia and she is playing an opponent who is significantly lower in rankings and is less experienced. I am expecting Zhang Shuai to win this match in straight sets.
