The Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx meet Saturday in WNBA action at the Target Center.
The Chicago Sky have a chance to be the most improved team in the league under coach James Wade, as this club lost a lot of frustrating games last season that kept them from sneaking into the playoffs. The Sky return their top-seven scorers from last season, including double-digit scorers in Allie Quigley, Diamond DeShields and Courtney Vandersloot. Cheyenne Parker early was the fourth double-digit scorer and I still feel Stefanie Dolson has another level she can reach. UConn rookie Katie Lou Samuelson adds even more scoring firepower to the Sky, as she shot 50.1 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from three in three seasons with the Huskies. The Chicago Sky are a team heading in the right direction quickly, it’s just a matter of improving defensively.
The Minnesota Lynx go from being title contenders every year to a team with serious question marks. Maya Moore decided to take the year off and Lindsay Whalen has retired. Let’s also remember that the Lynx didn’t look great last year, finishing the season 18-16 and losing in the first round to the rival Los Angeles Sparks. The positives for the Lynx is that there’s still familiar faces from the good old days with a trio of Sylvia Fowles, Seimone Augustus and Rebekkah Brunson. That stability and leadership should help keep the Lynx afloat and UConn rookie Napheesa Collier is a dominant post presence who should provide an immediate impact. The Minnesota Lynx will look a lot different, but maybe some switching things up will be good for the franchise.
The Sky are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 Saturday games, 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Lynx are 17-7-1 ATS in their last 25 Saturday games, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Sky are 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings. The under is 13-4 in Lynx last 17 overall. The over is 4-1 in Sky last 5 overall.
The Chicago Sky hav the offensive firepower to steal this game on the road and set the tone for the season, but there's going to be adjustments with a new coach and you still have to question their defensive effort. Even without some of their best players from past years on the roster, the Minnesota Lynx have enough leadership and experience to keep things going. Until proven otherwise, the Lynx are the better team in this spot and will do the little things to get the job done. I'll lay the reasonable chalk with the Lynx in their season opener.
