The Dallas Wings and Phoenix Mercury meet Friday in WNBA action at the Talking Stick Resort Arena.
The Dallas Wings finished last season winning five of their last nine games to sneak into the playoffs. This year the Wings should have higher expectations with a healthier and more confident Sklyar Diggins-Smith leading the way and with the addition of Liz Cambage. That’s instantly one of the better duos in the league and sure to make the Wings a tough team to defend this season. Players such as Azurá Stevens and Allisha Gray also provide depth the Wings have struggled to produce the last few years. The Dallas Wings are going to be an exciting team to watch and an offensive powerhouse that wants to push the pace. The obvious issue with the Wings is defense, as tempo works both ways and they finished the regular season allowing 78 or more points in 19 straight games.
The Phoenix Mercury were swept by the Los Angeles Sparks in the semifinals, but the expectations haven’t changed for this club, as there’s still reason to consider this team title contenders. A 1-2 punch of Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner is as good as any in the WNBA and is enough to carry this team majority of the way when they’re both clicking. But this years Mercury are deeper than last years squad thanks to the return of DeWanna Bonner, as well as the additions of Briann January and Sancho Lyttle. Bonner is a legit double-digit scorer, while January and Lyttle are two of the better defenders in the league and add athleticism to this squad as well. The Phoenix Mercury won’t be as top heavy as they were a year ago, which could make the world of difference in chasing their first title in four years.
The Wings are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games, 2-5 ATS in their last 7 vs. Western Conference and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Mercury are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Friday games, 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall. The under is 34-16-2 in Mercury last 52 home games and the under is 3-1-1 in Wings last 5 overall.
The Dallas Wings will be a team to watch this season due to their offense, but their defense is still a question, and that's not good on the road. The Phoenix Mercury are a legit title contender and are about as balanced and deep as they've been in years. You have to lay the small chalk with the home team here.
