Last year’s runners-up the Canberra Raiders look to keep their perfect start to the season in tact as they take on the Newcastle Knights.
Canberra are off an impressive 22-6 win over the heavy weight Melbourne Storm while the Knights went the distance with the Penrith Panthers in a game that could not be decided after 10mins of overtime.
Canberra forced the Storm into mistakes and poor decisions in what was one of the most complete performances of the season thus far. Goal line defence produced multiple crucial stops for the green machine and their weapons out wide put the points on the board. While in years gone by the Raiders have been known for their off-the-cuff style play and shoot-out style approach what they have done over the last 18months defensively has been impressive. As they enter round 4, no team has managed over 6 points against the defence of Canberra.
Knights rallied from a 14-point deficit to hold the Panthers scoreless for over 60mins in their bout on Sunday. They will welcome back star fullback Kalyn Ponga but have question marks surrounding the fitness of Mitchell Pearce, Connor Watson and Lachlan Fitzgibbon. Should Pearce and Watson be ruled out they have very little depth in the play-making role.
Knights were gallant in the way they never quit against Penrith despite losing both Pearce and Watson early due to injury however, the notion of blooding rookie playmakers with zero match fitness due to the cancellations of second tier competitions for mine is too much of an obstacle against a very good defensive unit.
