Round 5 NRL action gets under way this week with the Manly Sea Eagles playing host to the Brisbane Broncos at Central Coast Stadium.
Manly are coming off a controversial defeat at the hands of the undefeated Parramatta Eels where the last pass in a set play was deemed to have gone forward. Manly showed great poise fighting back from a considerable early deficit to get within four points of the competition leaders. Trailing 12-2 at halftime Manly ran in 3 unanswered tries in the second half but managing only one out of three conversions saw their efforts fall short. Jorge Taufua had a big game with 179 run meters, 2 line breaks and two tries in the loss. Manly will look for him to repeat that performance on a paper thin Brisbane right hand side defence this week.
Broncos were nothing short of a dumpster fire in their round 4 clash with the reigning premiers. Being belted by the clubs all-time greatest losing margin of 59-0. Brisbane managed just 69% completions and 39% possession in the loss with just 1 line break. Too many holes in the defensive line, the Broncos had 44 missed tackles, allowed 10 line breaks and a whopping 884 post contact meters in the loss. Prop Matt Lodge labelled the effort ‘embarrassing’ and conceded that a lot of the Broncos young talent is ‘not as good as they think they are’.
Given the fact Brisbane have managed just 1 try over their last two games I cannot see a lot going their way in this one offensively. However, they welcome back Katoni Staggs out wide and some of their enforcers in the middle. Their combinations have not been very good and I feel they will take a little longer to come together. Manly have not been lighting the world alight offensively and I think the kicking games will be a big factor in this one.
