Monday night football returns to our screens tonight with Manchester City hosting Newcastle United in what promises to be an exciting encounter. New Manchester City boss Manuel Pelligrini will hope to keep pace with fellow title contenders Manchester United and Chelsea who have already registered their first wins of the season.
Manchester City have added yet more star power in the offseason spending over £110m brining in Jovetich, Fernandinho, Negredo and Jesus Navas, the axing of Roberto Mancini at the end of the season led the way to City appointing Manuel Pelligrini and the former Mallorca boss has splashed the cash. Pelligrini though is known for having his team well organised and tough to beat, this will not be the first time he has been in charge of a top club having spent a year at Real Madrid and his time with the Galactico’s should have him well prepped to work with the array of talent that Manchester City currently have. I expect City to be very tough to break down defensively with club captain Vincent Kompany leading by example from the back. The signing of Fernandinho will strengthen City’s midfield significantly and it is expected he will protect the back four and handle most of the defensive midfield work freeing up Ya Ya Toure for those raking forward runs he produces time and time again. Jovetic and Negredo will slot into the attack alongside Dzeko and Aguero but it’s yet to be seen who will be the two starting frontmen. My money at the moment would be on Aguero and Negredo getting the starting spots but Dzeko has shown some great form in preseason and could turn out to be the most accomplished finisher of the four. Jovetich is still young and I think may struggle to break into the side but the season is still young so we will just have to wait and see.
Newcastle United had a horror season last year and Alan Pardew will be under pressure to make sure the team performs better this season and finishes in the top half at the very least. Loic Remy is the only name addition and the former Marseille and QPR man could prove to be a diamond of a loan signing. Remy showed glimpese of his talent for the short time he was with QPR and I expect him to have a big impact on Tyneside as Newcastle have the talent to utilise his skills much more than QPR did. With Cabaye , Sissoklo and Tiote in midfield Newcastle will not be overrun or outworked and tonight’s game, while a dauting one, will not overawe the Newcastle players. Papa Cisse has shown time and again that his power and pace are a handful for any defence and he has scored some unbelievable goals in his time in the league.
Tough opener for Newcastle tonight traveling to Mancheser to take on a City team that have spent more on four players in the off season than the combined cost of the Newcastle starting 11! Manuel Pelligrini comes to Manchester City with a good reputation but a huge amount of expectation is sitting on his shoulders. Manchester City’s owners want to win the league, the Champions league and the cups, they appear to want everything and anything other than perfection appears to be inadequate. Every sports fan knows that perfection is almost impossible and with such lofty expectations I think City are doomed for failure. But with that said Manchester City will be too good for Newcastle tonight. I’m hoping Newcastle have a go at City from the off as their season will not be determined by these Marquee matchups but I have a feeling it will be a tense and tight occasion. I’m going to take Manchester City to win by 2 or more and I’m also going to have a small bet on City winning 2-0 exactly at 7/1.
