A novel pairing in the supercup see's Athletico Madrid host Barcelona in the first leg of the cup. Both team's have added players in the offseason but one of the more interesting transfers was David Villa moving from Barcelona to Athletico Madrid, Villa just didnt have much luck with Barcelona and with Messi there the Spanish star just didnt fit into Barca's game plan. It will be interesting to see if a change of scenery can get Villa back to where he was in his Valencia days. Deigo Costa will be Villa's young strike partner and the Brazilian netted 2 goals at the weekend in a 3-1 win away from home. Diego Simeone the Atheltico Coach will have no problems goin gup against Barcelona and will relish the challenge of trying to stop the allstars.
Barcelona have become their own version of the Harlem Globetrotters at this stage bringing in Neymar to play alongside Messi. The young Brazilian superstar has been the talk of the football world for the last few years but has failed to deliver thus far, his move to Barca will be an interesting platform on which to perform. The only question will be now, can he do perform at the top level in Europe alongside the best player in the world in Lionel Messi. At the weekend Barcelona ripped Levante apart scoring 7 goals and that is the third time in the last four games that Barca have scored 7 or more.
The Super Cup is pretty much just a glorified friendly but the match up this year makes it semi interesting especially with the David Villa subplot, playing against Barcelona the team that he just never really fitted in to. I think that Diego Simeone will be lookign forward to this game and will be plotting behind the scenes to come up with some sort of scheme to stop his fellow countryman Lionel Messi. The Vincent Caulderon stadium was a fortress for Athletico Madrid last season and I think they will look to continue to play tough against Barcelona and Real at home and win most of the other league games at home. I like the odds on the draw tomorrow and I'm going to take Athletico to frustrate Barcelona and get a draw. This is not a pick I love because of the lack of meaning to the game.
