On Sunday Manchester United were completely outplayed by their cross city counterparts, the Sky blue of Manchester was celebrating and there were murmurs in the red half about David Moyes lack of ambition with his team selection. Wayne Rooney labeled the performance sloppy and he was right , most of the media sources seem to have glossed over Rooney's own performance saying he was a bundle of energy and the only one trying for Manchester United. The truth is Rooney was just as awful as his team mates, his first touch was poor and his finishing was inept. Until his 87th minute free kick he never looked like scoring, his free kick was sublime but Manchester United need more than the occasional decent strike. Luckily for United fans and the team the Carling Cup has provided the perfect bounce back platform as Manchester United face their biggest rival in Liverpool with the added spice of the return of Luis Suarez.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will welcome back Luis Suarez from his ten game ban for biting. The uruguayian is as terrific footballer even if he has alot of discipline issues, there was also a protracted attempt by Suarez and his agent to force Liverpool to sell him to Arsenal in the summer but as of now all is forgiven and Suarez is still a Liverpool player. In the first round Rodgers played a mostly first string side and I think a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United will also lead to Liverpool putting out a first string team. I expect to see Stephen Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and if so then we could get a cracking game.
The league game between these two in Anfield was a real disappointment , Liverpool scored early and even though they were at home they sat back and absorbed the pressure that United put on them. Throughout the 90 minutes United didnt do enough and without any real creativity on the bench David Moyes couldnt turn to his bench to save him. I expect Giggs , Zaha, Hernandez to start tomorrow and I think that Moyes may turn to Shinji Kagawa in midfield. Manchester United were lacking attacking creativity on Sunday, Kagawa would provide that and playing in the hole behind Rooney with 4 in midfield may be the best way for United to get the better of their rivals on Wednesday night. Tough game to call this one but I like both teams to score. A sneaky beton Luis Suarez to score at any time may be rewarded for those who like a bit of extra risk. Follow me on twitter@antonpippo
