Galatasaray only squeezed through to the knockout stages of the Champions League with a win against Juventus on the last match day, an eighty fifth minute winner by Wesley Sneijder broke Juve hearts and sent the home fans into raptures. Roberto Mancini since taking over the Turkish giants has got the team together and they have put together a solid run in the league unbeaten in the Super League since November. With quality strikers in the squad such as Didier Drogba, Yilmaz and Bulut not to mention goal scoring midfielders like Inan and Sneijder there is no doubt that Galatasaray can be a handful for anyone on their day. An interesting subplot to this game of course will be Didier Drogba facing his old Chelsea team mates in competitive action for the first time. A hero in Stamford bridge the return leg will no doubt be an emotional one for Drogba but dont expect the Ivorian to take it easy on his old club as this could be his final season in the Champions League and he will surely want to go out with a bang.
Turning to Chelsea and we see a team that have been ruthlessly efficient of late. Jose Mourhino may be quoted in the media as having no strikers but the reality is something else, Eto , Torres and Ba while not a world class trio are definitely very very capable. Torres and Eto in particular have shown signs this season that they could be lethal given the right supply. The supply will come from the brilliant belgian Eden Hazard who right now is one of the best footballers on the planet. The ease at which he seems to open defences is frightening and he's the top scorer in the club right now as well so his finishing is obviously quite good. Defensively Mourhino will turn to his reliable partnership of Cahill and Terry with Luiz playing in front. I think they will find it very hard to mark their former colleague Mr Drogba.
Chelsea are favourites here and probably rightly so but I dont think this one is going to be an easy tie for the blues. I fancy Galatasaray's chances of getting something from this game, with Sneijder , Drogba and Yilmaz in the team it wouldnt even surprise me if Galatasaray nicked a 2-1 win at home. But I'm taking Galtasaray +1 on the handicap. Follow me on twitter@antonpippo
