The season has been a bust for Manchester United pretty much from day one, right now the club and manager David Moyes are just looking to stabilise the ship and to move in the right direction. It is obvious to any outside looking in that the transition from Ferguson to Moyes has not gone according to plan. A number of factors are at play here and most of them outside the control of Moyes so he should not be the martyr for this cause. Injuries to Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie were costly early in the season and then a raft of defensive injuries to Evan, Vidic, Smalling and Jones have been very costly to the teams chances of retaining the Premier League. In January the team added the sublime talents of Juan Mata and while that should work out in the long run at the moment it looks like nothing more than an expensive luxury. Mata will be a key player at Old Trafford for years to come but at the moment what the team and the fans need are wins. That may mean sacrificing Mata and going with a Fletcher, Fellaini and Carrick midfield and a top three of Wellbeck, Rooney and Van Persie. David Moyes is a smart manager and I believe that ultimately this season will not make or break his time at Manchester United but he should be looking at the next month as an important ones to build his rapport with the fans. While losing is not expected at Manchester United losing without effort(as the team has done on a couple of occasions) will not be tolerated. There were times in Ferguson's reign that a flat first half team performance got the half time hairdryer from Ferguson which often inflated the teams second half efforts. Moyes might need to start treating his star players more like schoolboys if the abject performances continue, maybe then will we see the true spirit of this team emerge. With huge games against Liverpool, Olympiakos and Manchester City coming up Manchester United fans will be hoping for some sorts of signs of life.
West Bromwich Albion come into this game off the back of a 1-1 draw with Fulham. The team has shown great signs of life at home in the hawthorns where although they have not won in their last five games they have credible draws against Liverpool, Chelsea and Everton. Thats three impressive performances and there is no reason to think that the Baggies will have any fear coming up against a Manchester United side that have been anything but impressive in recent weeks. Victor Anichibee has scored some important goals in recent weeks and its likly Pepe Mel will turn to the nigerian striker as Nicolas Anelka is due to start the first game of his five game ban from the Quenelle gesture controversy. This Westbrom team did win in Old Trafford earlier in the season ,the first time since 1978. Can Westbrom get another famous victory over Manchester United or will United get some semblence of revenge for the defeat in Old Trafford earlier this season?
A huge game for Manchester United here, one that I think DavidMoyes will have his players really psyched up for. There is no doubt that the United players are hurting as a group as their poor season has drawn maybe unreasonable criticism from the media and the public alike. Victims of the clubs success and high standards some of the younger United players, Cleverly , Wellbeck , Smalling and Jones have probably been treated a little harshly. But one of the bets i like this week is United to lead at half time, like I already mentioned I fully expect Moyes to have United very hyped up for this game and I think they come out of the blocks fast. West Brom have been slow starters in alot of their home games and the away team has led at halftime in eight of the last nine West Brom home games so we'll be looking for that stat to continue.
