After the dust had settled in the Emirates and the first leg of this intriguing tie was done Bayern Munich, the reigning European Champions lead 2-0 on aggregate. But that scoreline doesnt quite tell the full story of a topsy turvy game, one in which Arsenal had a penalty saved before Arsenal goalkeeper Szcezny made a terrible error of judgement and got sent off leaving Arsenal with a mountain to climb being a man down against such a good team. Arsenal fought hard in that second half but a ridiculous waste of a free kick by Jack Wilshire with two minutes to go ended in Bayern Munich scoring a second to wrap the game up and possibly the tie. Arsenal come to Munich knowing they must win by two clear goals to have any chance of advancing. Faced with a similar scenario last season Arsenal knew they must score three in the Allianz Arena and fell just short winning the game 2-0. The same scoreline on Tuesday would bring us to extra time. Arsene Wenger knows that Mezut Ozil is the key for the Gunners the German playemakers brilliance was apparent in the early stages of the league but he has gone off the boil somewhat since Christmas. He did show signs of his class in the first leg though and although he missed a penalty (motivation for the second leg if he needs any) he was the best attacking option Arsenal had. With Giroud having found his second wind and Cazorla and Ozil playing in behind and the pace and trickery of Oxlade Chamberlain on the win I really think Arsenal are not dead in this tie.
Bayern Munich on the other had are a very special team and there is no doubt about that, Pep Guardiola's side have gone through the Bundesliga unbeaten so far and its hard to see where they will lose a game in a league that until know has not been of the highest quality. Munich though are a spectacularly good side and with Ribery and Robben have two of the finest wingers on the planet, Robben was the main tormentor of Arsenal in the first leg as Ribery missed out through injury. The pair will be on the field together on Tuesday night though and will be looking to score early to put this tie to bed, the question I suppose is can Arsenal get at Bayern's defence which has been sensational in the Bundelsiga but looked shaky enough in Europe especially in that first leg at the emirates.
I have a simple question that I must ask myself, should Arsenal be 8/1 in this game. The answer is no. No matter how good Bayern Munich are, Arsenal are not that bad and I think that if Szecny had not been sent off in the first leg I firmly believe Arsenal would have won that first tie. And while Arsenal might not win this game Arsenal +2 on the handicap is one of my favourite bets of the week. Am i misguided in my trust in Wenger and Arsenal? Maybe, they have let me down on occasion but I really do think this Arsenal team are well capable of giving Bayern Munich a game over 90 minutes and I just cant see Munich winning by three goals.
