Real Madrid announced themselves as serious contenders for the Champions League crown with a stunning 6-1 victory against Schalke in Germany. A brace a piece from Benzema , Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo allowed the Spanish side to pretty much put the tie to bed in the first leg. Formalities are all that are left as Schalke arrive in Spain looking for a miracle and some if they are to progress. I do expect a firmer display from Schalke who were not as bad as the 6-1 scorelines suggests. Early goals led to an open game and getting hit on the counter attack. There is no doubting the pedigree and quality of this Madrid team though and right now they have to be considered among the best in Europe with Ronaldo head and shoulders above all but his great nemisis Messi. Carlo Ancelotti may have on eye on the league game this weekend with Barcelona when he picks his eleven for tonight and I'm sure that the players will also have one eye on the mouthwatering league encounter.
Schalke will come to the Bernebeau with one thing one their mind to restore some pride in the jersey after an embaressing defeat at home. With players of the calibre of Far Fan, Huntelaar and Boateng there is enough quality here for Schalke to give Madrid a game but I do have a feeling they will sit back and hit Real on the counter attack. I'm sure the club and players know that winning the tie is beyond them but a creditable result here in the Bernebeau is not.
I'm going to take a chance on Schalke here, they were beaten 6-1 in the first leg but I think they are better defensively than they showed in that first game and they had chances early in that game that could have altered the complexion of the tie. I am taking Schalke +2 and hoping that we see some pride in the jersey from a group of players that were well and truly embaressed last time out. Follow me on twitter@antonpippo
