One of the strange things about Aston Villa has been their inconsistancies. The Villains put in a huge effort against Chelsea to win 1-0 with a superb Fabian Delph goal being the difference, only to follow that game with an anemic performance at home to Stoke City in a game that Villa actually led 1-0 after five minutes but lost 4-1. Paul Lambert will be working on trying to bring the level of consistant performances up for his side who ,in fairness, have been able to lift their game against the bigger teams losing by a solitary goal to both Arsenal and Everton recently and drawing with Liverpool. Aston Villa are one of only two teams to take points from Liverpool at Anfield. Christian Benteke has found his form recently scoring six goals in his last ten games, look for the big Belgian to get stuck into a Manchester United defence that has looked vulnerable of late. I expect Agbonlahor Weimann and Benteke to cause lots of problems for United's rearguard here.
Manchester United were humbled 3-0 by Manchester City on Tuesday night, it was a quick reminder for United fans of how far away the team is from the desired level. Manchester United had just pulled out two good wins over West Ham and Olympiakos after another humbling defeat at home to Liverpool, can the Red Devils bounce back here in similar fashion? The loss of Robin Van Persie to injury is huge and while Wayne Rooney is an adequate replacement in the ability stakes he just is not as lethal in front of goal as Van Persie. David Moyes will probably start a quartet of attackers from the middle with Kagawa, Rooney, Wellbeck and Mata favoured to start against a Villa side that have actually faired better away from home than at home, this season. Old Trafford will be a little apprehensive with a huge Champions League game agaisnt Bayern Munich looming on the horizon (Tuesday night) but the Theathre of Dreams should still provide a great atmosphere on Saturday morning.
An interesting game here with many facets to consider. I think Manchester United players may well have one eye on the Champions League game on Tuesday night and I really dislike the price on United to win this game outright but I do still think they should get a result here. The over/under market looks a better bet, given United's defensive problems I think Villa can get a goal here maybe two and United should definitely be able to score a couple against Villa. I'm going to take the overs here, not one of the stronger picks of the weekend but still worth playing. Follow me on twitter@antonpippo
