What a game in store on Tuesday as Chelsea play Athletico at the Vincent Cauldron Stadium in Madrid. Jose Mourhino's team lost a controversial game on Saturday as a couple of decisions went against the blues including a penalty decision that cost the blues at least a point. Chelsea will come into this game though with one thought on their mind and that is getting some sort of result in spain that gives them a chance to qualify. I think Mourhino will set out to be tough to break down and to play on the counter attack. Mourhino has some great counter attacking midfielders with Willian, Oscar, Schurrle and Hazard. Chelsea though have struggled all season up front with Eto, Ba and Torres not doing enough to be a true number 1 striker. Defensively though Chelsea have been sound all season and for the most part Terry and Cahill have been very good alongside Azipilcueto and Ivanovich. Mourhino will probably deploy David luiz in the midfield to patrol just in front of the back four to give yet more protection. Jose Mourhino I think will be happy to go to Madrid and play for a 0-0.
Diego Simeone's team lead La Liga, they have been simply senational this term and have yet again proven that you can sell your top players if you replace them with quality replacements. David Villa and Diego Costa have been having a terrific season for Athletico and could well be the starting partnership for Spain in the world cup at the end of the season. The beautiful thing about what Athletico have been doing is that it doesnt matter who is missing the players coming in have stepped up to the mark and got it done. This was very evident in the quarter final when Diego Costa was missing but Villa, Koke and the other Diego have all shown great resolve to step up and be counted. Of course one of the over shadowing understories of this game is that the Athletico goalkeeper Thibaut is on loan at Athletico from Chelsea. There were rumours that the young keeper would not be allowed to play as per the loan agreement but with lots of people getting involved(UEFA, FIFA) it appears as if the young Belgian will indeed start on tuesday night.
This game is shaping up to be a tactical battle between two of the best managers in football. While Jose Mourhino was getting all the headlines at Real Madrid , Diego Simeone was busy building a championship contender across the city at Athletico Madrid. Form points to Athletico Madrid and to be honest I would find it hard to bet against that. At the moment i just think Athletico are a better side. I do think Mourhino may come up with a tactic to frustrate the home side but I just cant see Athletico coming away from this with anything less than a win. I am taking Athletico to get the win at home. Follow me on twitter@antonpippo
