Mexico and Cameroon kick off day two of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil on Friday as they wrap up the first round robin contest of Group A.
Cameroon has been a mainstay of African soccer for years as they seem to always find their way into international competitions but much unlike other years this team looks to be completely overmatched by their foes in the group stage. With the likes of Nigeria, Algeria, Ivory Coast, and Ghana representing Africa in this year’s World Cup there is less pressure on Cameroon to succeed than in year’s past when an entire continent rested on their shoulders and while this team does have the ability to compete with some of Africa’s best I think this tournament will be a disaster for them. They take on Mexico in their tournament opener before having to square off against Croatia after a game with Brazil then finish off with a date with the hosts and to be honest I think this is going to be a painful three and done vacation for the Cameroon side who will have to come up with something special to earn any points in this group stage.

Javier Hernandez and El Tri head into the World Cup with high expectations but in a group with world powers Brazil and Croatia and a disappointing qualifying round in which they had to play their way in could doom their hopes in the preliminary round. Mexico plays in the underwhelming CONCACAF region of world qualifying and while they’re still considered among the top two in the region with the United States they are ranked in behind Honduras in this tournament and are on par with Costa Rica. There always seems to be accompanying politics with this Mexican side and while that may not come to fruition until the tournament is over you have to wonder whether it’ll play a factor in the group stage especially against talented side from Croatia and Brazil. The bottom line for Mexico here is that they need to generate a result in this tournament opener if they want any shot at advancing and with the Croatia-Brazil match slated to be a tight one Mexico knows they can take advantage with a strong opening to the tournament and with the price we’re getting I think it is worth it to take a risk on the Mexicans winning by at least two goals. I will suggest the money line here but as stated they need a special effort in the opener if they want any shot at advancing to the knockout stage.
