Greece and Japan battle it out in hopes of keeping their World Cup dreams intact as both sides look for their first victory of the tournament.
Greece kicked things off in lackluster fashion as they dropped a 3-0 decision to Colombia in a game they were never really close to competing in and now have to face off against a Japanese side who feels rob of a win in the opener against the Ivory Coast. Greece have struggled on the international stage since their unexpected victory at Euro 2004 and while their World Cup dream is a long way from over it could all come crashing down if they lose their second contest of the group stage against Japan which the odds makers at this point think is inevitable. Greece is well known for their defensive style of play but it came back to haunt them against a solid Colombian side who was able to generate opportunities off of Greece’s mistakes and while Japan may not be of the same caliber as Colombia I don’t think they are too far off and they demonstrated they have a ton of athleticism and speed.

Japan have Asian powers on the soccer field for years and while South Korea is starting to take some of that spotlight away I think it is clear they are still the continent’s best hope at winning the World Cup and they can prove it with a win here. Japan opened up the scoring against Ivory Coast with a blistering shot from Honda that looked as though it was going to be enough for a Japanese victory but a minute and a half onslaught from their opponent’s led to two goals that would ultimately stand as the final mark. Japan has a ton of work to do if they’re going to get out of the group stage but with Ivory Coast and Colombia beating each other up earlier in the day the Japanese have a chance to secure three points and set up a great finale with Colombia who could be resting some players if they defeat the Ivory Coast. Either way all things points to a victory here for Japan as I think they’re the better team and should prove it with a solid team effort.
