Uruguay look to bounce back after a tournament opening loss to Costa Rica as they square off against a confident England team looking for their first win as well.
Uruguay were considered one of a handful of teams expected to do some damage in this tournament as they have had recent success in Brazil and would have a large fanfare in a group they should be able to escape from but after their first contest against the group’s weakest team they have zero points. Uruguay dropped a 3-1 decision to a very athletic but raw Costa Rican side that pulled off possibly the biggest upset of the tournament through the first wave of games with Luis Suarez on the bench and with that move deemed to backfire we should see the Liverpool man in this one in a do or die situation. Cavani was the best player on the pitch for Uruguay in their defeat and he netted the side’s only marker from the penalty spot but now with Suarez back it could leave Cavani a little more open to build the play but the English know that Suarez is not in full health and could take full advantage in what is a marquee second contest that many expect will produce the group runners up behind Italy.

England head into their second contest without a point but played very well in a game against their archrivals from Italy and one that could very well have ended in a draw or in favour of the Three Lions. England conceded the first goal of the match but responded quickly thanks to a brilliant ball from Wayne Rooney that met the foot of a streaking Daniel Sturridge but ultimately it wasn’t to be as Mario Balotelli broke English hearts and gave the win to the Italians. The English did play a very solid match though as it is clear they are a dangerous team in transition which could lead to their advantage in this contest against a sluggish looking Uruguay side that have fallen out of favour with the odds makers. England are the deeper team in my eyes despite Uruguay having a home field edge and arguably the best player in the match in Suarez but with his health still in question and Uruguay having to do some real damage in this game before a final match with Italy I just don’t see it happening and I expect Uruguay’s desperation to exploit them in the middle third, allowing England to build the play and secure a much needed victory.
