Argentina and Nigeria will square off Wednesday afternoon in their final World Cup opening round matchup.
Argentina enters this matchup with wins in its first two matches in large part thanks to Lionel Messi. The superstar soccer player has scored a goal in each of the first two games, including a last-minute game winner against Iran to break the 0-0 score. After that match, Messi admitted that Argentina can play better, but his team controlled the ball for 70 percent of the match and had many close calls before his incredible shot found the net. Argentina is clearly a hungry and talented team with a point to prove, but will need some production from Sergio Aguero in order to feel good about its chances. Everything can’t lay in the hands of Messi.

Nigeria has been one of the biggest surprises in the tournament with a draw against Iran and a victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina. Nigeria got 13 of its 20 shots on goal and scored its first goal of the tournament in the 1-0 win, to put the country in great shape heading into this match. However, Nigeria will have to find the net more than once in this match if they have any chance of upsetting Argentina and its potent attack. Coach Stephen Keshi is known for running an aggressive team full of guys who won’t back down, but guys such as Victor Moses are due for an international goal.
We know what Argentina is capable of, but Nigeria has gotten off 30 total shots in its first two matches. When you give yourself that many chances to score, good things are going to eventually happen. While I’m not sure Nigeria has what it takes to win, I do like the value of the draw, as I think both teams will match one another’s energy.
Nigeria won’t back down in this match and would be thrilled to come out with one extra point.
