Germany and the United States will square off Thursday afternoon in a match that will determine who will advance out of the Group of Death.
The United States outplayed Portugal for much of the game and it looked like it was going to win the game before Silvestre Varela found the net in the final seconds, forcing a draw. The U.S. is still in a comfortable position with four points, but could have already guaranteed an advance with a win in its last match. The good news for the United States is that there’s hope for the return of Jozy Altidore, as he traveled with the team. The United States played a wonderful game against Portugal by getting 10 shots on goal and evening out the possession by 48 percent. Clint Dempsey must continue to perform at a high level, as he’s scored in each of the first two matches.

Germany pounded Portugal and settled for a 2-2 draw against Ghana to pretty much be in the same spot as the United States. Germany is capable of being a scoring machine, as they have six goals in the tournament on 15 shots on goal. Germany gets quality shots whenever it wants and has one of the better goalkeepers in the tournament with Manuel Neuer leading the way. Thomas Muller has three goals and an assist in the tournament and is somebody the United States must pay attention to at all times. Germany is certainly the top team the States have faced thus far.
This is an interesting match considering both teams advance to the next round if there’s a draw. Maybe they take it easy and call it a day? Germany assistant coach Hansi Flick said his team is playing to win. Whether you believe that or not is totally up to you.
However, I like the chances of a draw in this spot. The United States has proven it isn’t going to back down from anybody and Germany has the talent to help even out the playing field. Expect a low scoring game with a draw being the end result.
