Uruguay and Columbia will meet in the knockout stages of the 2014 World Cup on Saturday afternoon.
Uruguay bounced back nicely from its loss to Costa Rica to be England and Italy. Uruguay looked like a much better team with Luis Suarez on the field the last two games, as he missed the first matchup with a knee injury. However, there’s a good chance Suarez won’t be part of this match, as he bit Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini and may be suspended for the rest of the tournament. If that’s the case, Uruguay is in serious trouble considering Diego Forlan has pretty much been a no show throughout the World Cup. While Uruguay’s offense will take a major hit, it’s the defense that also must improve, as it has lost the possession battle in its last two matches, including allowing England to control the ball 62 percent of the time.

Colombia has looked unstoppable through its first three matches, as it simply handled Greece, Ivory Coast and Japan. Despite coach Jose Pekerman resting some of his key players in almost a meaningless match against Japan, four of Colombia’s nine shots on goal found the net. Jackson Martinez scored two goals in the 4-1 victory. Teofilo Gutierrez will be back on the field for Colombia in this match, as he scored a goal in his first match and found the net twice in Colombia’s win over Uruguay in the World Cup qualifying in 2012. Colombia’s main concern remains on the defensive side of the ball, but that may not matter much if Suarez isn’t involved for Uruguay.
Whether Uruguay has its star player on the field or not, I like Colombia to advance. They are the better and have been the more consistent team throughout the tournament. Colombia’s relentless attack will wear down Uruguay and lead to a victory late in the second half.
The plus money is just a bonus.
