Argentina look to become the third South American side in the final eight joining Brazil and Colombia as they take on Switzerland in the round of 16.
Argentina have done what many expected them to do and that is coast through the group stage with three victories and finish at the top though many didn’t expect the traffic they faced to getting there. Argentina looked sluggish in their tournament opener against Bosnia and barely escaped the Iranians as Lionel Messi netted one of the goals of the tournament in extra time to secure a victory there before a narrow victory against Nigeria sealed their place at the top. Argentina have not only the best player in the tournament but a ton of supporting players in the form of Higuain, di Maria, and Aguerro but those three haven’t played up to par and as such the Argentines haven’t dominated in the way many expected they would. They take on a Swiss team who are coming off their best game of the tournament which was a do or die 3-0 victory over Honduras and while the competition level for the Swiss here is light years ahead of that match the circumstances remain the same.

Switzerland barely held on for a 2-1 victory in their tournament opener against Ecuador before getting shelled by France in their second contest but you have to give them full marks for battling back and advancing out of the group stage after it looked as though they were going to bury their heads and go home. The Swiss to many are very much overrated as their top 10 world ranking is seen as an oversight but with the way they played against Honduras in a must win situation it goes to show they have some great talent and solid coaching. Xerdan Shaqiri netted a hat trick for the red and white to send them into this match with Argentina and many compare his game to that of Messi and if the two of them create space we should see some spectacular finishes in this contest. The line on this one is a bit ridiculous as to me both teams haven’t been overly impressive so far in this World Cup and while the Albiceleste have the home field edge I think the Swiss can not only keep this close but could pull off a win. As such I am taking the Swiss to cover with a possible sprinkle on the money line.
