2014 FIFA World Cup: Argentina vs. Germany Pick, Odds, Prediction - 7/13/14

Germany (5-0-1) vs. Argentina (5-0-1)

World Cup: Sunday, July 13, 2014 at 3:00 pm (Brazil)

The Line: Germany See the Latest Odds

Argentina and Germany will square off Sunday afternoon for the 2014 World Cup title.

Germany absolutely beat down Brazil in front of its home fans in arguably the worst semifinal performance in World Cup history, winning 7-1. Germany scored seven goals with just 12 shots on goal and scored four goals in the span of six minutes. Thomas Müller now has at least one goal or assist in five of Germany’s six matches and André Schürrle has scored three goals in the last three matches. Germany is clicking on all cylinders, including its defense with goalie Manuel Neuer allowing just two goals in the last four games. Germany is an offensive machine at the moment, is passing the ball well and seems to be able to score at any moment, as it has placed an impressive 40 shots on goal in its last three matches.

Argentina wasn’t as impressive in its semifinal match, but was able to beat the Netherlands in penalty kicks after settling for a 0-0 draw throughout regulation. While the score doesn’t tell much, Argentina held the Netherlands to just three shots on goal in over 90 minutes. That elite defense has really helped Argentina along the way, as they have now pitched three straight shutouts and have allowed a combined 14 shots on goal in those matches. Keep in mind, Argentina has won its last three matches without receiving a single goal from Lionel Messi. Argentina is a scary tem considering how deadly it is offensively and it’s been winning its matches with defense.

These were two of the top teams heading into the tournament, so this game could certainly go either way. And while Germany has looked like the better team overall, Argentina has been terrific defensively and is bound to breakout offensively. Argentina also has the best overall player in this match in Messi, who is likely to breakout in any moment.

I’ll go ahead and take Argentina to hoist the cup given the value.
