At the start of the season I was worried by the exodus of players from Southampton, I thought that there was no way the team could possibly continue to compete having lost so many of their stand out stars but Ronald Koeman has come in and done a fantastic job in getting the squad to continue playing attractive football and getting results. Southampton had a terrific win last time out at West Ham, led by Morgan Sneiderlein who netted twice. Shane Long has looked sharp on the pitch but is yet to open his Southampton account and Ward Prowse and Pelle look to also be key players for the Saints if they are to continue to defy the critics and stay in the top half of the table. The purchase of Frazer Forster from Celtic has been a good addition as the young Englishman is a goalkeeper of the highest standard and will bring solidity and assurance to the Southampton back line.
Newcastle have started the season slowly, a lack of goals for the strikers has been a problem as has some shoddy defending when conceding three last time out to Crystal Palace. Alan Pardew went out and purchased some goal scoring in the form of frenchman Riviere from Monaco where he scored ten goals in nineteen starts last season. Simon De Jong should also bring some goals from midfield havign scored double figures in four of th e last five years for Ajax and scoring seven in sixteen appearances last term. Its hard to gauge how Newcastle will play from week to week but one thing is for certain when on form this Newcastle side have some very exciting attacking players with Riviere, Goufran, De Jong, Colback and Perez.
Two teams that like to play football here in a ground that should be rocking, Newcastle were much better last time out than their first two games this season and Southampton were simply brilliant against West Ham. I like the overs here, I just think that defensively there are question marks over both sides especially Southampton as they lost both their first choice center half , right and left backs. I do think there is also value in backing Southampton to win outright but my money will be on the over. Follow me on twitter@antonpippo
