After a forthnight in which Liverpool have lost two of their last three games and really struggled in the European game against Ludogrets where they needed an injury time winner to overcome the minnows, Brendan Rodgers may well be glad for the distraction of the league cup. While most Premier League players use the league cup to rest players, give swuad players a run out and to test out potential youth players I think Rodgers tonight may just give some of his first teamers a chance to get some confidence in what could be a tricky game. Mario Balotelli ,Stephen Gerrard and Raheem Sterling are most likely to be rested for the occasion with the Everton Derby game on this weekend but I expect Henderson, Lucas, Allen and most of the regular back four to get a game. I am not sure how much emphasis Brendand Rodgers will put on winning this game though with a pretty packed schedule and European football this term, the League cup may just be a competition too far for the reds.
On the other hand Middlesbrough have been flying this season sitting in fifth in the Championship table and coming into this game off the back of a 4-0 win at the weekend. Middlesbrough will fancy their chances of upsetting the Premier LEague team in this one and look for Leadbitter to try to continue his great start to the season where he has notched six goals in eight games from midfield. Spanish striker Kike has also started his Middlesbrough career well with four goals in eight games. What has been interesting this season is watching how Middlesbrough have improved both tactically and physically, Karanka's first pre season in charge obviously helped get across his Phylosophy and the fitness regime and both have stood to Middlesbrough thus far. It could be an interesting season at the Riverside.
I'm taking the overs here, I think Middlesbrough can definitely get on the scoresheet tonight and Liverpool's system leads to goals. Rickie Lambert and Borini should start up front for the Liverpool and I think both can provide goals and could be a decent partnership but neither will start in front of Balotelli and Sturridge in the league. Take the overs here and enjoy what should be an entertaining encounter. Follow me on twitter@antonpippo
