Wayne Rooney to Paris Saint-Germain in January?
Firstly I want to clarify these are rumours and in the world of soccer rumours are ten a penny and you can pick up any rag and find stories about Ronaldo coming back to Manchester United, Messi to Manchester City and Zlatan to Chelsea. These are of course unsubstanuated and part of a media circus that is driven by the need to sell papers. In this article I am looking at a specific rumour that seems to keep getting reported everytime a transfer window approaches and that is Wayne Rooney to France, specifically Paris Saint-Germain. Although it is true that Monaco have had eyes on Rooney for a while and are looking for a marquee player now that they have let Falco go to Manchester United and James Rodriguez leave for Real Madrid.
Ok so down to the nitty gritty could Manchester United really sell their captain and talisman in January? Well the simple answer is yes. Louis Van Gaal likes playing a 4-3-3 system and Wayne Rooney likes to play through the center , unfortunately for Wayne he is not as good at leading the line as Robin Van Persie or Falcao and therefore will be pushed to the left or right in a forward three. With Young, Januzai capable of playing those roles to a similar level as Rooney and Di Maria and Mata playing the role even better than the captain there is an argument to be made that Manchester United would not miss Rooney if they let him go, probably for big money. The other element of this is the proceeds from the sale could be used on a big name defender like Hummels or a midfielder like Reus to strengthen that front three even more. On top of that United would get our of the ridiculous 5 year £300k a week deal they rushed into signing last season when it looked like the club was on the slide and needed to prove it could keep marquee players. So does this mean the exit door for Wayne Rooney , possibly, but we must now find where he would/could land?

The most obvious place for Wayne Rooney to end up is Paris Saint-Germain where Thiago Silva has been an admirer for a couple of years as mentioned here. Add that to Zlatan Ibrahimovich's very public admiration of Rooney here and here And you can see how this could happen. Does Rooney fit in with PSG, yes he does. Rooney played his best football with Manchester United up front beside Berbatov, he can play a similar role off Ibrahimovich and he would not be affected by Zlatan's massive ego. Add in that any deal for Rooney would probably signal the exit of Cavani and more than likely to the Premier League ( Manchester United or Arsenal) then we can see that PSG would be left with three main forwards Rooney, Zlatan and Lavezzi. Money wise can PSG afford him? Yes their owners have very very deep pockets and could not only afford the large transfer fee but could also afford to match the ridiculous £300k a week wages he is on at Manchester United. So Wayne Rooney in a PSG shirt makes sense then sort of?
Another possible club that Rooney could find himself at are Paris St Germaine's Ligue 1 rivals Monaco. There have been alot of rumours linking Rooney with a move to the principality, with As Monaco vice President mentioning a possibility of signing Rooney here. Monaco is an interesting destination as the tax free wages would be a huge draw for some players, Rooney would get to partner Dimitar Berbatov again and Rooney would be their marquee player especially as Falcao and Rodriguez have left for foreign shores in the last transfer window. Personally I dont think Rooney is motivated by money though and I see this as an unlikely move unless it formed some part of a swap deal for Falcao who is currently on loan at Manchester United.
So in short Paris Saint-Germain seems the likely landing spot for Wayne Rooney if Manchester United decide to part ways with their captain. Will it happen this January? I doubt it, in fact I doubt he will move at all. Wayne Rooney seems more interested in cementing his own status as a legend in Old Trafford. Louis Van Gaal has made Rooney captain for a reason, he works hard and is committed and passionate not to mention extremely talented. He is ,theoretically at least ,the kind of player you can build a team around the only question is now will Wayne Rooney finally deliver on the huge potential he has had since breaking onto the world football scene with Everton or will he continue to be overshadowed by the Ronaldo's and Messi's of this world?
