After a shock loss to West Ham at the weekend Manchester City are unlikely to take Newcastle for granted in the Capital One Cup game on Wednesday night. Manuel Pelligrini is likely to rest a number of his starters though as he uses this opportunity to give game time to some fringe players Fernandinho, Jovetic, Milner, Nastasic, sagna, Caballero are all likely to make starts tonight, not bad when your reserves are all internationals in their own right. The Ethiad will expect a performance as the Citizens look to continue their defence of the cup they won last season. With Ya Ya toure, Silva and Aguero all expected to be rested though this could be a potential banana skin for Manchester City.
Those who remember last years meeting in St James Park will remember that Newcastle should have knocked Manchester City out over the ninty minutes only to lose 2-0 in extra time. Newcastle have come into a little form recently that has somewhat eased the pressure on Alan Pardew although I still feel that Pardew is one bad defeat from the exit door he will be given a little more time considering the team has lost just once in their last six in all competitions. Injuries look likely to prevent Riviere, Cisse and De Jong from playing any part tonight but an interesting parntership of Ameobi, Perez with Gouffran playing in the hole may cause Manchester City some problems.

This has the potential to be a goalfest, people may think I am mad considering Newcastle are expected to arrive at the Ethiad and park the bus in front of the goal but I have enjoyed watching Newcastle in three of the last four games and they have been playing entertaining football with the exception of that awful game with Leicester. Manchester City have players that can score from anywhere , quality is strewn through the City squad and I fully expect some of those fringe players to make a case for themselves starting league games, especially Jovetich. For this reason I am going with the overs and have this one pencilled in as a must watch. Follow me on twitter@antonpippo
