Game of the day in the Bundesliga will see Schalke04 host high flying Wolfsburg at the Veltins Arena in Gesinkirchen. Wolfsburg have put together quite the team with former Bayern Munich stars Olic and Gustavo key experienced players in a team of youth. Former Chelsea midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is the key man in midfield with former Arsenal striker Nicolas Bendtner up front but yet to register a goal for his new club. Ivan Perisic has netted three goals in seven games and overall Wolfsburg look the only team of threatening Bayern Munich this year. This will be a tough test for them as Schalke are not going to roll over and the Veltins Arena is a tough place to go and win.
For Schalke this game represents an opportunity to come out of a mini slump that the club is enduring. Having lost the last two games in all competitions Schalke and their fans possibly needed the International break more than most just so that they could get a chance to regroup. With some exceptionally talented forwards in Choupu-moting, Draxler and Huntelaar the clubs fans expect and the start to the season just has not been good enough. Roberto Di Mateo has come in as manager and the former Chelsea boss will be looking for stability at the back first before he works on anything else. With Chelsea Di Mateo cultivated the best defensive side in Europe and he will try similar here with a talented Schalke side.
While I understand why Wolfsburg are favourites they have won eight games in a row, Schalke is not an easy place to go and win. In fact Schalke are unbeaten at home this season. In addition they have won their last five home games and only conceded three goals over that period. While I admire what Wolsburg are doing I still feel that Schalke are being written off to simple here. I am taking Schalke on the handicap here. Simply put Schalke are too good at home to be a 2/1 dog no matter the opponent.
