Wednesday night will see Arsenal and Southampton come face to face at the Emirates. Arsenal got a win at West Brom at the weekend, a much needed win but hardly impressive just sneaking a 1-0. Danny Wellbeck proved the match winner and has scored some important goals since transfering from Manchester United. The return of Koscielny and Giroud was much needed with yet more injuries hitting the squad with Arteta and Wilshire due to miss some time now. Alexis Sanchez has been Arsenal's best player this season, the summer signing from Barcelona has proven to be worth every penny of the £35m spent on him and alongside Wellbeck has found the going easy in the Premier League with eight goals in twelve games. If Arsenal are to push on up the table it will be Sanchez and Wellbeck that need to keep performing at a high level. Even with a poor season thus far the fans at the Emirates expect a performance on Wednesday night, can the Gunners deliver?
Southampton are without a doubt the fairytale story of the season but things became a little unhinged on Sunday when they lost to Manchester City by three goals. In truth the loss was not that clear cut with City scoring twice on the counter when Southampton were pressing for an equaliser. Up front Southampton may choose to start Shane Long alongside Pelle with Morgan Sneiderlein due to miss the game through injury. This would allow former Celtic man Wanyama to drop into the holding role and give Southampton more pace up front. Long was impressive when he came on against City and was responsible for City's Mangala getting a second yellow. Southampton manager Ronaldo Koeman will want to get something from this one as a loss here could see Southampton only one point clear of fourth.
Promising to be an enjoyable game of ball , Southampton have proven to be a tough nut to crack over the year but with Arsenal's fast pace on the wings and up front this could lead to goals. I cant help feeling that Southampton look the better bet here, even missing sneiderlein I think Southampton can frustrate Arsenal and with Long's pace can hit the gunners on the counter attack. I am going to take Southampton +1 on the handicap. I like the draw here but am taking the underdogs on the handicap because they may just nick this one.
