Everton host the Champions Manchester City on Saturday with the home team needing a win. The toffees are desperate for a result having lost four of the last five and slipped into the bottom half of the league table and are very much in line for a lost season. Roberto Martinez's side battled back midweek against West Ham for a draw in the FA Cup. Could this be a turn around for their season? Romalu Lukaku scored the equaliser midweek though and the relief was evident after his first goal in eight. Everton played well agaisnt Manchester City before Christmas though and only lost the game by a solitary goal, With Coleman, Baines, Barkley, Eto, Mirallas and Lukaku Everton do have a team capable of causing problems for Manchester City's brittle backline and in Gareth Barry they have a player capable of curtailing the influence of David Silva. This is a chance for Everton to get a big result at Goodison Park that could turn their season around.
Manchester City have a had a terrific December, turning an eight point deficit on its head and they are now level with Chelsea at the top of the Premier League. All this without their best player Sergio Aguero who has been out injured. City have some terrific footballers in their squad although they will lose Ya Ya Toure for the rest of the month due to African Cup of Nations duty. Nasri and Silva will be even more important to the Citizens in the coming weeks. Pelligrini should have doubts about his backline though as City have conceded in each of their last four games.
This game is one of those ones that on paper looks like an away banker, however Everton are better than the results they have been getting recently. I think that while Martinez has made mistakes his team deserved more than they got in a couple of tough losses at Newcastle and at home against Stoke. For this reason I am going to take Everton +1 on the handicap. I think Everton can get a result here against Manchester City who while they have been winning have failed to convince me in a number of recent games.
