Southampton travel north to take on managerless Newcastle United in St James Park, can the Saints turnover the Magpies and cement their position in third place in the Premier League? Southampton were brilliant against Manchester United last weekend putting in one of the best defensive displays of the season and hitting United on the counter attack with Tadic finishng a brilliant move. Pelle was terrific in the game a the long striker and Shane Long has been impressive coming in as a sub and led the line well in the FA Cup tie against Ipswich midweek. Southampton though have now lost Schneiderlein and Wanyama to muscle injuries and that will weaken their midfield can Ronald Koeman find the correct balance to minimise the effect the injuries has on the team.
Newcastle come into this game without both their top scorer and a manager. Papa Cisse will be at the ACON with Senegal and without him Newcastle will lean on Reveillerre and Perez. Goufran and Cissokho are going to be the key men with Southampton struggling through the center. Newcastle have been excellent at home but that was with Alan Pardew as manager, since Pardew left things have slowly started to fall apart with injuries and a what appears to be a lack of a smooth transition. John Carver has a tough job replacing Pardew who was doing an excellent job.
This one is tough to handicap. Southampton are without a doubt the best team here but this is away from home and Newcastle have been excellent at home. But Newcastle are missing their top scorer and have looked lacklustre in recent weeks because of a mixture of the transition and injuries. I am going to jump on the overs here. Even with injuries I think Southampton look capable of netting a couple and I think Newcastle can at least get on the scoresheet here. This one could be a cracker and given that its at 5.30 in the evening there should be a great atmosphere in St James Park.
