Schalke play host to Real Madrid in the last sixteen of the Champions League on Wednesday night with both teams in patchy form. Schalke know that they are out manned here and big underdogs at home. Schalke lost at home 5-0 to Chelsea in November but they take on a big team here in Real Madrid , last years Champions and one of the favourites for this years competition. Schalke will welcome back Jan Klass Huntelaar who has missed the last three games through suspension. While Di Mateo has been working on the defensive end of the team since his arrival the former Chelsea manager knows his work will be cut out for his team when they face Real Madrid's potent offence.
Cristiano Ronaldo has now gone three games without scoring, the longest drought of his season thus far which is ridiculous. Real Madrid have struggled at times over the last month, coming back from the winter break a little flat and were awful last week against Atletico Madrid who achieved the double over Real with a comprehensive 4-0 win last week. Carlo Ancelotti will be missing Rodriguez and Modric through injury but will have Benzema, Bale and Ronaldo to rely on. A stronger front three will not be found in European football. Will Real Madrid be able to reproduce the 6-1 win they had against Schalke last year in the quarterfinals of this competition?
This one should be a good contest. Schalke will not want to be embarressed like they were last year and Roberto Di Mateo will set it that they play a full defensive front , pack the midfield and try to squeeze out the space in front of their back four to stop the Bale, Benzema and Ronaldo Axis. This will be tighter than the bookmakers are making it. I'm taking the draw at half time as I think Schalke keep this tight for an hour or so before eventually succumbing to Ronaldo and co.
