Monday night football live from Anfield where Liverpool will play host Newcastle United , Liverpool have been given a glimmer of hope in their Champions League aspirations as Manchester City lost again on Sunday and therefore a win tonight leaves the reds just four points from City and fourth place. With Tottenham faltering last weekend it seems as if the race for fourth will be between Southampton, Manchester City and Liverpool. City still have pole position and could well still finish second or third but given the current form of all the teams around them it is more likely they are left scrapping for fourth. Liverpool need goals from Sterling and Sturridge as they have both struggled in recent weeks. Couthino is having a terrific season and can be a center piece for the club moving forward but he will need more assistance from his strikers. Brendan Rodgers is a clever manager though and he will know that a win tonight gives his team a hope again!
Newcastle come into this game having lost four games on the trot and the Magpies are not playing well. John Carver's time in charge looks limited as I imagine he gets the sack at the end of the season. Newcastle need a change in fortune and a game against Liverpool could be the spark they need but to be honest given their current struggles I am not optimistic. Newcastle on paper have a fine squad but their lack of quality up front is hurting them . Papa Cisse is suspended and the striker is their top scorer and biggest threat, his absense has opened the door for Ayoze and Revilliere but neither have stepped up to the mark. Two goals in their last six games is a telling stat. Newcastle simply must get more goals in order to get their season moving again.
After suffering back to back league defeats to rivals Manchester United and Arsenal, Liverpool need to bounce back and I think they do so with a big win tonight. Newcastle are in terrible form and a trip to anfield is not likely to change Newcastle's fortunes. Take Liverpool -1 here as I think the reds run riot on Monday night football
