Another finely balanced quarter final in the Champions League will see the two Madrid sides Real and Atletico go face to face at the Bernebeau. With the first leg finishing scoreless Real Madrid know they must win tonight to qualify for the semi final. A score draw is enough to send Atletico to the semi finals and given that Atletico are on a nine game unbeaten streak against their cross city rivals there should be an element of confidence about this Atletico side. Diego Simeone has been terrific since taking over Atletico, not only did he end Barcelona and Real Madrid's dominance in La Liga but he has constantly chopped and changed his side, sold his best players and re worked his magic to continue to make Atletico competitive. Tactically he has nearly always got it right against Atletico's biggest rivals as well and hence the domination in recent years. Atletico have some exceptionally talented players with Mandzukich, Turan, Greizmann and Torres but it is the way they play as a team that has made them so successful. From back to front this is a really solid team and they all play for each other, they will need that togetherness in the hostile atmosphere of the Bernebeau.
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has some big decisions to make with regard to his team selection. With Benzema and Bale struggling for form will Ancelotti drop one or both to the bench? There is no shortage of superstars on Madrid's bench with Isco and Hernandez ready made replacements for the out of form pair. Real know that this game is going to be a real battle and it is going to take a supreme performance to get the win here. Real's fortunes probably revolve around the best player on the planet and Cristiano Ronaldo has struggled to get his game going against Atletico Madrid as Simeone has consistantly found a way to frustrate the brilliant Portugese forward. Ronaldo though on top form is almost unstoppable and he does tend to rise to the occasion for Real Madrid performing best in their big games. Tonight is one they need him, the question is can he and his team mates find a way to win against this well organised Atletico Unit?
I'm going to take the draw here, I actually think Atletico may get through on away goals and wouldnt be surprised if this finishes 1-1. I just like how Atletico finished the first leg, yes Real Madrid were without doubt the better team in the first half but they didnt take their chances and their lack of an away goal could prove ultimately disasterous tonight. Also this Atletico Madrid team suffered a heartbreaking loss to Real in the Champions League final last season, qualification tonight would be a sweet revenge for most of this squad and I think they might just do it.
