Germany and Ivory Coast take the field Sunday afternoon for their opening match of the 2015 Women’s FIFA World Cup.
Germany absolutely ran through the UEFA qualifying group, as it continues its streak of never missing a World Cup appearance. Germany is one of the deeper teams in the tournament, as it has several players who can lead the way offensively and plays great defense. Whether it’s Celia Sasic, Anja Mittag or Alexandra Popp, Germany is in good hands offensively with its depth. Germany also has a nice combination of experience and youth, as five different players have 100-plus caps and 10 other players are 23 years old or younger. The only main weakness for Germany is its last line of defense, especially with Nadine Kessler injured. Germany could be in trouble if a team is able to push the ball downfield against them.

Ivory Coast looks to make an impact in its first World Cup appearance on the women’s side. Ivory Coast looks to play team defense and get its offensive production by whoever is feeling it that day. Veteran goalie Dominique Thiamale will set the tone for this team and hopes to carry momentum from the African Women's Championship. Offensively, youngsters Ines Nrehy and Jose Nahi have to be aggressive and take their chances. Ivory Coast is easily one of the younger teams in the tournament with just three players 30 years old or older. The main concern I have with Ivory Coast is the team doesn’t have a go-to player when in trouble. Who will be the player to step up when most needed? I’m not sure Ivory Coast has that difference maker just yet.
I think it’s fair to say that Ivory Coast is in over its head, especially in this match against a championship contender in the Germans. This match could get really ugly quickly, and Ivory Coast doesn’t have the firepower to respond or keep this match competitive.
I look for Germany to win this match big and cover the spread.
