France and England meet Tuesday afternoon in their opening match of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
France makes the World Cup for the third time and hopes to build on its semifinal appearance in 2011. France is capable of playing many styles, but prefers to play an uptempo, quick pace that puts a lot of pressure on defenses. France has good ball handlers and can put the ball on the net from just about anywhere. Gaetane Thiney had 13 goals in the European qualifiers and 55 national goals overall, giving France a go-to striker. Louisa Necib is possibly the best midfielder in this entire tournament and Marie-Laure Delie is another playmaker who has 37 goals in two years with The Parisians. France is loaded with playmakers and gets a high percentage of its shots on goal. The concern with France is this team has never reached a major final. So, while extremely talented, you have to wonder when things will completely come together.
England reaches its third straight World Cup after back-to-back quarterfinal appearances. This is a different England team under Mark Sampson, as it likes to play with pace and more aggressiveness on the offensive end. Fara Williams and Eniola Aluko have combined for 69 national goals and have over 200 caps despite still being in their primes. Toni Duggan is the youngster who will be England’s x-factor, as she’s starting to find her form heading into this tournament. England is now a more creative team on the offensive end and like France, can put the ball on goal from long distances. The concern with England is the new leadership on this team, as Kelly Smith, who retired in February, played a huge role in keeping this team together. While experienced, it’ll be interesting to see who takes charge during tough situations.
Both of these teams like to get a lot of shots on goal and have enough playmakers to strike early and often. This has the potential to be a shootout if everything lines up well.
Because of the scoring potential, I’m going to side with the over in this match.
