Mexico and Colombia meet Tuesday afternoon in their opening match of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Mexico makes back-to-back World Cup appearances but is still looking to get past the group stage for the first time. Mexico is a team that relies on ball control and possession, spending a lot of time playing keep away from its opponent. Charlyn Corral leads the way for Mexico with her experience and scoring ability, while Monica Ocampo also has playmaking ability, as she’s one of the top players for the Sky Blue FC. The x-factor for Mexico will be Teresa Noyola, who does a nice job of setting her teammates up. Experience is a concern for Mexico, as most of these players spend much of their time playing in the United States. Mexico has just two players older than 28 years old, so it’ll be interesting to see how this team starts the tournament.

Colombia has also made back-to-back World Cups and looks for its first appearance past the group stage. Colombia relies on a tough and physical defense, while the offensive side of the ball is pure speed. Catalina Usme is one of Colombia’s biggest offensive threats, as she has 19 national goals in 40 caps. Yoreli Rincón is also a flashy player who can find the net once her speed gets her in the open field. Defensively, Sandra Sepulveda at goalie and Natalia Gaitan on the backline give Colombia a fighting chance to stay in games. The concern with Colombia is the stagnant offense at times, as this team didn’t score a single goal in the 2011 World Cup and barely got any quality looks. Colombia has to be more aggressive offensively to see a different outcome.

Mexico wants to keep the ball and Colombia wants to play elite defense. This should be a good matchup that allows both teams to do what they want to do. I think Colombia would be fine with a draw simply because there isn’t a ton of scoring potential on this team. I also don’t have a ton of confidence in Mexico until proven otherwise.

I like the value of a draw in this spot.
