Germany and Norway play Thursday afternoon in their second matchup in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Norway is coming off a 4-0 victory over Thailand in which they flat out dominated. Norway controlled the ball for 65 percent of the time and got goals from Isabell Herlovsen and Trine Ronning. Norway’s defense also held Thailand to just three shots on goal and just seven attempts overall. Meanwhile, Norway had 25 attempts overall and nine shots on target. While Norway played an overall solid game, it will have to be more aggressive in this match and get double-digit shots on goal to have a chance against the aggressive Germans. Bottom line is that Norway will now have a chance to prove if its for real after taking advantage of a far less experienced team in the opening match.
Germany flat out beat the bricks off of Ivory Coast, winning its opening match, 10-0. Germany had 17 shots on goal and 29 shots overall. Celia Sasic had a hat trick, Anja Mittag added to the fun and Alexandra Popp put the finishing touches on late in the match. Overall, the Germans controlled the ball for 61 percent of the match, allowed just two shots on goal and looked the best of any team in the opening round so far. Germany is going to continue attacking and put pressure on the opponent's defense. If the opening match is a sign of things to come, it could spell trouble for the rest. However, much like Norway, Germany did beat up on a team that has no World Cup experience, so this will be a bigger test.
This should be a more entertaining match than the first two matches, however, I think Germany has too much firepower and should pick up another victory. Norway isn’t aggressive enough offensively to hang in this match.
Of course, the chalk makes this a no play for me. However, I see the Germans win yet another matchup rather easily.
