Ivory Coast and Thailand meet Thursday night in their second matchup of the 2015 Women’s FIFA World Cup.
Ivory Coast was slaughtered in its first ever World Cup match, losing to the Germans, 10-0. Ivory Coast controlled the ball just 39 percent of the match and got just two shots on goal. Meanwhile, Ivory Coast allowed Germany allowed 17 shots on goal and 29 shots overall, as the defense couldn’t keep anybody in front. Despite allowing 10 goals, goalie Dominique Thiamale played the best, as she made seven saves and continued to show her athleticism. Ivory Coast also showed physicality in the match, committing 29 fouls and six yellow cards. While Ivory Coast was outmatched in its first contest, the offense has to make better decisions and take pressure off the defense. Whether it’s Ines Nrehy or Josee Nahi, somebody has to step up on the offensive end to give this team a chance to win a match.
Thailand didn’t play much better in its opening match, losing 4-0 to Norway. Thailand controlled the ball just 35 percent of the match and had three of its seven attempts on goal. Thailand was dominated on the defensive end, as it allowed Norway to get off 25 attempts and nine of them on goal. Thailand is a good passing team that moves the ball well up and down the field, so it should be getting more attempts offensively. If Thailand is going to get in the win column, Nisa Romyen and Kanjana Sungngoen have to get going on the offensive end, as they both have the ability to takeover a match. We’ll see how Thailand responds against a lesser experienced team.
Now that Ivory Coast has a World Cup game under its belt, I expect a much better showing. Let’s be honest, it’s not like Germany is a cakewalk of a team, especially when it's your first time playing in this tournament.
I have a lot more confidence in Ivory Coast than Thailand due to being a more balanced team.
Look for Ivory Coast to show its true colors in more of a far match.
