Ivory Coast and Norway play their third matchup of the 2015 Women’s World Cup Monday afternoon.
Ivory Coast is still looking for its first ever World Cup victory after losing a frustrating game to Thailand, 3-2. Both teams controlled the ball for 50 percent of the match, and Ivory Coast was far more aggressive with 17 shots overall and six shots on target. Ivory Coast now has eight shots on goal in this tournament and just two goals to show for it. Ange Nguessan and Josee Nahi are the two players who have found the net. The good thing for Ivory Coast is that its defense was far better in its second match, allowing just eight shots, five of which were on target. While the defense could still improve, it certainly beats what happened against Germany. Ines Nrehy has to get going if Ivory Coast is going to pick up its first ever victory in this tournament.
Norway is now 1-0-1 after putting up a fight and forcing a draw against Germany. Norway gave up just one goal despite allowing 27 shots overall and eight shots on goal. Goalie Ingrid Hjelmseth has been the player of the tournament for Norway, as she has nine saves and just one goal allowed through the first two matches. Offensively, Norway struggled a bit but did get three of its four shot attempts on goal in 48 percent of the time controlling the ball. Norway has shown that its deep offensively and can manage to get quality looks even if the offense isn’t in a rhythm. Norway now has 29 shot attempts through its first two matches. I look for Isabell Herlovsen to get back to being aggressive and looking to add to her already two-goal total this tournament.
Ivory Coast has made progress, but the common denominator in this match is that Norway played a hell of a lot better against Germany than the team from Africa. Ivory Coast just may not be ready for the bright lights just yet and could be in for another long day with Norway’s ability to get good looks.
While Norway is by far the more talented team and should have little problem winning this match, the line is being a little rude to Ivory Coast. Ivory Coast improved a lot in its last match and will be out there with a nothing-to-lose attitude. I'm taking the free goals here.
