Thailand and Germany meet Monday afternoon in their third match of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Thailand is coming off a 3-2 victory over Ivory Coast and could use another big victory here to give itself a shot of advancing to the next round. In the victory, Thailand controlled the ball 50 percent of the match and got five of its eight shot attempts on target. Thailand now has eight shots on target through its first two matches, and Orathai Srimanee has two of the team’s three goals. Defensively, Thailand could still improve drastically, as it's allowed a combined 42 shots and 15 shots on target. Goalie Waraporn Boonsing has given up four first half goals. In order to even have a shot in this match, Thailand needs its heavy hitters to come out swinging, including Nisa Romyen and Kanjana Sungngoen, who have combined for 62 national goals.
Germany was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Norway, but has managed to play on its terms all tournament. Even in the draw, Germany controlled the ball 52 percent of the match, got 27 shots and eight shots on target. Germany now has 56 shots overall and 25 shots on goal through its first two matches. Anja Mittag and Celia Sasic have combined for seven of Germany’s goals, while Lena Goessling has chipped in two assists. Germany is just attacking and attacking, and there hasn’t been a team yet that’s been able to slow things down. Defensively, Germany has allowed just five shots on target this tournament, making the job rather easy for goalkeeper Nadine Angerer. Germany looks like a runaway freight train on the offensive end right now.
This is a scary matchup for Thailand, a team that’s allowing shots left and right. Scary thing is, Germany is the best team it’s going to see in this opening round. I think it’s clear to say that Thailand is in trouble.
This match is so lopsided to oddmakers that there's not even a ML available at the time I updated this article. Anyway, I'm taking the free goals, as there haven't been many blowouts in this tournament, and Thailand has some players who can score a goal or two to promise a cover.
