China and Cameroon will play Saturday night in the round of 16 in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
China finished second in group A after beating the Netherlands and forcing a draw against New Zealand. China has done a great job of speeding up the tempo, passing the ball well and getting quality looks. In fact, China has 16 shots on target in its last two matches and 41 shots overall this tournament. Wang Lisi and Shanshan Wang have combined for all three goals, while Tan Ruyin has an assist. China has also shown its physical side, as its averaging 10 fouls per match and picked up two yellow cards in its last contest. China should enter this match with high confidence given the way its played. The concern for China is that it hasn’t exactly dominated ball possession this tournament and will give up its fair share of quality shots. Wang Fei has shown that she can be beaten if pushed.
Cameroon beat Ecuador and Switzerland, finishing second in group C to get to this point. Cameroon hasn’t been shy when it comes to pushing the pace, as its attempted 51 overall shots and has gotten 21 of those shots on goal. Gabrielle Onguene and Gaelle Enganamouit have combined for five goals and been super aggressive, while Raissa Feudjio has an assist. Cameroon has shown that’s going to play its style of game and force its opponent to adjust if it wants to win. Cameroon has also played solid defense up to this point, allowing just nine shots on goal. The concern with Cameroon in this match is it’s playing a disciplined team in China and will have to be patient with its attack. Cameroon lost to Japan, a team that plays a similar style.
Cameroon is going to play the only way it knows how but has to be careful against a China team that will capitalize off of its mistakes. This is a clash in styles, and it’s going to be interesting to see how the match is played early.
China is the smarter and more disciplined team, and Cameroon already lost to Japan which plays a similar style. I like China to get the win and advance.
