The United States and Colombia play Monday night in the round of 16 in the 2015 FIFA Women’s Women Cup.
The United States won group D with victories over Australia and Nigeria. The U.S. has won the time of possession in all of its matches and has gotten 14 shots on target out of 38 shots overall. Megan Rapinoe and Abby Wambach have combined for three goals while Sydney Leroux has three shot attempts and an assist. Overall, the United States has just four goals this tournament and has to feel it should have had more success on that side of the field. Defensively is where the United States has won its matches, as its allowed just eight shots on target and Hope Solo has come away with seven saves and just one goal allowed. The U.S. has to feel it could play a lot better and this matchup will give the Americans that chance to prove why they’re the favorites.

Colombia forced a draw against Mexico and beat France to sneak into the round of 16. Colombia isn’t going to change its stripes, as this is a defensive team that loads the box and plays not to allow a single quality shot. Colombia has allowed 42 shots overall and only 13 of those shots have been on target. Sandra Sepulveda has come away with nine saves and will be back after missing Colombia’s last match due to two yellow cards. Offensively, Colombia has just six shots on target but four of those shots have produced a goal. Lady Andrade and Catalina Usme have combined for three of those goals and Yoreli Rincón has an assist and three shot attempts. Colombia is a dangerous team that won’t force the issue offensively but has success when it does try to put the ball on the net.
This is a very dangerous match for the United States, as Colombia has proven to be that team that nobody wants to play. Colombia will put pressure on the U.S. and could have a chance to steal late as long as the defense hangs around.
This line is shocking to me, as Colombia has proven to be a sleeping giant this tournament. While I think the U.S. still wins, I think this is a tight match throughout. Give me the two free goals.
