On friday night Peru and Paraguay will face off in the third/fourth place playoff of the Copa America. Peru will feel somewhat hard done by to be in the game, having had a terrific tournament and only losing out to Chile by a solitary goal in a game that could have went either way only for some questionable refereeing decisions. Peru have alot of quality in their first eleven and star man Jefferson Far Fan of Schalke was brilliant in the semi final. Peru played seventy minutes of that semi final with ten men and in the end that may just have been the difference. Peru were terrific for the entire tournament though and players like Geurrero have really shown their quality to those who do not watch South American club football. The Flmengo forward lit up the quarter final with a hat trick and a couple of goals in this game could see him finish top scorer in the tournament.
Paraguay collapsed against tournament favourites Argentina in the semi final. Lionel Messi suddenly exploded into action setting up three and playing a key role in two more as Argentina's squad finally caught fire netting six goals in the semi final. This is what we've been waiting for Argentina to finally play like the sum of their parts rather than a collection of individuals. Paraguay on the day had no answer and to be fair I dont think any team in the world could have dealt with Argentina on the night such was the brilliance of their performance. Paraguay though will want to finish the tournament strong and Roque Santa Cruz as captain will know this could be his last tournament and will want to leave the Copa America with a win. Valdes, Santa Cruz and Barrios will provide plenty of attacking talent up top for Paraguay and this should be an entertaining game.
While it is unusual for me to pick the overs in a game between Paraguay and anyone I think we have the right combination of factors here. Firstly this is the third/fourth place playoff so the reality is neither team will really care about the game but both will go out and try to win, this isnt like a final where both teams will be nervous not to make a mistake and lose and should lead to more of an attacking game. Both sides possess quality strikers that will finish chances that are created. I'm taking the overs and looking forward to sitting down to watch this one.
