Liverpool travel to Stoke City on Sunday for their first game of the Premier League season with Brendan Rodgers side very different to the team that was hammered 6-1 by Stoke on the last day of last season. The Britannia stadium is a tough place to go to and Stoke City will want to continue to protect their home patch and a win on opening day against Liverpool would be perfect for the Potters. Stoke have added some quality players in the off season with Affellay, Joselu and El Ouriachi and Van Ginkel all coming in. Mark Hughes has been prudent in the transfer market and Stoke are a team that have played some nice football at times over the last number of years and Mark Hughes is trying to build a team that can compete for European places. Hughes has his team playing attractive football but they are also tough to beat and physically dominant. This will be an interesting test for Stoke against a new look Liverpool.
Brendand Rodgers was busy in the transfer market this summer with Raheem Sterling leaving for Manchester City before the Reds brought in Christian Benteke, Firminho , Milner and Clyne. The departure of Stephen Gerrard will of course be tough to deal with as he was an icon for so many years at Anfield but the truth is in Milner Liverpool have a better player currently as gerrards legs are just not up for the Premier League pace. The loss of raheem sterling though is a hug loss for Liverpool as Sterling was one of their best players over the last two years and replacing him will not be easy. Firminho looks like he may have the talent to replace Sterling but with most signings from abroad they need some time to settle into the rough and tumble of the Premier League, I am interested to see how the Brazilian settles. Christin Benteke though looks a terrific signing from Aston Villa, the big Beligan knows what it takes to play in the league and if Liverpool can provide him with quality passes I think Benteke could be a twenty plus goals a season striker.
This one should be a cracking game, both sides have quality going forward and maybe more questions than answers defensively. I am going to take the overs here in a game that should see some open expansive football played. I wouldnt rule out taking Stoke as they seem a big price here, especially because they are at home and Liverpool struggled at times in pre season. Either way though the overs is the bet that stands out to me here.
