Iceland made history by qualifying for their first European Championships and it was well deserved. Iceland have been terrific during this qualifying campaign, led by Swansea City midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson who has netted five goals in eight games including the winners in both games against the Netherlands. This is a team that almost qualified for the World Cup only to come up short in the playoffs, they have not left it to the playoffs in this qualifying campaign but they can continue their success by winning the Group and getting a better seeding in the main competition. There is some quality throughout the squad with Sigbporsson, Gudmundsson and of course the experince of Eider Gudjohnsen but the success of Lars Lagerback's men has been their work ethic and tenacity within their tactics. This is truly a sum of their parts rather than the individual talents.
Latvia have played well in this campaign but really got a very tough group and have actually managed three of their points away from home against tough opposition. WIth draws against Turkey, Czech Republic away from home they wont fear going to Iceland but with nothing to play for and a carnvial atmosphere guaranteed to be present in Reykjavik will the away side be able to stay focused on the job at hand? My own personal view is that Iceland are going to be so up for this game that the opponents could very well get steam rolled. It's hard to really quantify the enormity of the success that Iceland have achieved here just be putting themselves in this position in a Group that contained World Cup semi finalists Netherlands, Turkey and the Czech Republic.
I am taking Iceland -1 here , I think they complete the fairytale and I think they will do it with a bit to spare on Saturday night as they make sure of qualification.
