Action from Lyon on tuesday night will see the home side face a Gent team that have a real chance to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition. There is still of course an outside chance that Lyon could make the knockout phase but they would need to win here and then beat Valencia and hope that Zenit beat Valencia tonight as well. Alot of ifs and buts but a possibility none the less. Lyon though have been terribly inconsistant this season, sitting in second place in Ligue 1 is more of an abhoration than their strong play. Completely outplayed on Friday night and soundly beaten 3-0 by a strong Nice side Lyon looked all over the place. With some good individuals Lacazette, Beauvue and Valbuena this is a team that should be performing more consistantly. I think their struggles though will continue and I wouldnt be surprised if this game ended up being a big banana skin.
Gent have been a breath of fresh air in the competition, they have given themselves a real shot at qualification by beating Valencia in Gent last time out and if they can get a win here in France they could be in pole position going into the last round of fixtures where they will have a home tie against Zenit and probably will still need a win. Either way it is pretty obvious to all that Belgian football even at club level is receivign a massive boost from the success of the national team and we should expect teams from Belgium to start becoming a regular occurance in the knockout stages of the Champions League. Lepoitre and Kums will be the key men as regards goals and it will be interesting to see if they can pull off a massive shock here.
While I understand that historically Lyon are the much bigger team here and they do play in a better league and even have better individuals this match up should be far more of a coinflip that the bookmakers have it down as. Lyon are simply not playing very well and have struggled to score goals in Europe. While Gent may struggle to win here I think they just might and definitely should be ok to cover the handicap. I'm taking the Belgians +1 in a game they could well win outright.
