A cracking Tyne Wear derby in store on Sunday morning as Newcastle United host Sunderland at St James Park with more than just local pride on the line here. Rafa Benitez took over from Steve Mclaren last week and the former Real Madrid, napoli, Chelsea and Liverpool boss will be looking not only to get a win in the derby but to move his side out of the relegation zone. Newcastle are now four points behind Norwich with two games in hand a simply must start winning games, especially their home ones. Newcastle's player of the season so far Wijnaldum will be the key creative influence going forward with mitrovic and Ayoze also key men. The signing of Jon Jo Shelvey appears to have been a positive one for Newcastle and the former Liverpool midfielder has assumed the captians role and played it well since joining in January. It's indicative of the problems within the squad that a player signed in January assumed the captains role, Steve Mclaren was a manager at sea but the arrival of Benitez should be a positive one for both the players and the club. Benitez may not be the most flaboyant manager but he will bring a defensive resiliance and I think he should be able to get Newcastle out of this relegation mess that they are in.
Sunderland have let a number of games go this season the draw with a ten man Southampton being an absolute killer and one of the most disappointing games of the season from Sam Allardyce's point of view. Sunderland have been heavily reliant on Jermaine Defoe for goals and he has not disappointed so far this season with eleven goals so far. Sunderland have lost just one of their last five games and that run has seen them close the gap on those above them, they lie just three points behind Norwich but have two games in hand. The Black Cats have had a rough season so far and it is going to be interesting to see if Allardyce can save them. Big Sam was fired from West Ham who are currently in fifth and appointed here after a ppor start to the season by Dick Advocaat.
Really tough given that this one is a derby. I believe that Rafa Benitez will find a way to save Newcastle though so for me that process starts here. Taking Newcastle to win the game and move closer to safety.
